In the middle
About 2,000 years ago (end of the 1st to the beginning of the 3rd century AD), the property of this house was in the middle of the Roman civilian settlement. The main street of this settlement ran approximately where the Rennweg is today. The street was at the same time the so-called Limesstraße, the road that ran along the Limes, the outer border of the Roman Empire. To the left and right of the road were narrow, long plots with so-called striped houses. Each house had a business premises on the street front. The entire settlement extended from the Botanical Gardens in the west to the Landstraßer Hauptstraße in the east.
Before the construction of this hotel excavations were carried out by the City Archeology Vienna. They discovered the remains of two Roman houses and a side street.
